People riding bikes through city

Our July meeting focused on cycling including new research on community interest in riding and a successful Open Streets promotion at a Brunswick school.

Study finds more interest in riding

A study of attitudes to riding across Melbourne suggests that the potential to increase bike riding is much higher than previously thought.
These are part of the research findings presented by Monash PhD candidate Lauren Pearson. Her work collected data from LGAs right across metro Melbourne.

Active and fun in Brunswick East

Also looking at cycling, Zoe McMaster presented on the success of the recent Brunswick East Primary School Open Streets Trial. Her council worked closely with the school community to close the street outside the school to traffic for three mornings as part of their Ride and Stride promotion.
Zoe brought some ideas she saw being used in the UK to enrich the school community’s perception and experiences about riding, walking and getting to school by active transport.
